The live-action adaptation of Cómo entrenar a tu dragón underwent significant creative decisions, revealing that several filmed sequences were ultimately removed. Director Dean DeBlois disclosed the rationale behind these cuts during a conversation with Variety, emphasizing the importance of maintaining narrative flow.

Key scenes cut from the final version

One eliminated segment featured an interaction between Hipo and Desdentao following their flight test. During this moment, the characters encountered small dragons attempting to steal their fish while observing the night sky. Despite being described as charming, the director acknowledged it ‘slowed down the pacing and conveyed information we already had.’

Another deleted sequence involved Astrid almost discovering Hipo’s secret. The scene depicted Hipo sneaking Desdentao into the blacksmith shop at night, only to be caught by Astrid. The situation escalated when Desdentao created a commotion inside the workshop, nearly exposing the hidden dragon.

Reasons behind the editorial choices

‘It was a sweet moment, another touch of Hipo’s failed flirtation attempts and Astrid’s suspicious nature,’ explained DeBlois. The director emphasized that while these scenes were fully produced with complete animation in post-production, they were ultimately sacrificed to maintain optimal pacing.

These creative decisions align with standard filmmaking practices where not all filmed material makes the final cut. The director noted that while certain sequences might work well conceptually, their execution on screen doesn’t always achieve the desired impact.

Additional content available

Although these scenes won’t appear in the theatrical version, audiences can expect to see them when the film becomes available in home formats. The supplementary material will include these cut sequences along with other bonus content featuring additional adventures of Hipo, Desdentao, Astrid and the rest of the cast on the island of Berk.

The film has performed well commercially, generating $197.8 million worldwide during its opening weekend. It has also received strong audience approval, currently holding a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the original animated version’s reception.
